Place:   Webster Groves Library 301 E. Lockwood Ave.  Webster Groves, MO 63119

Topic:  Desperation, Displacement, Determination, and Deuteronomy: Colonial Germans and What We Can Learn About Them

What factors drove our German-speaking ancestors from Europe in the 1700s, how their social status determined whether they left or not, and how their religion determined what records may exist for them today.  In addition to the push factors of wars, famines, and religious turmoil, I’ll address the rigid social laws created by the German guild system. I’ll explain pull factors including neulander recruiters, chain migration, and the new indenture system that allowed emigration to flourish. Once our German ancestors reached the colonies, I’ll explain the three different ship lists for Pennsylvania immigrants and advertisements for separated families. Lastly, I’ll explore specific Germanic religious denominations, their beliefs and how those beliefs affected what records they might have generated.

Speaker:  Sharon Cook MacInnes, Ph.D., is a Certified Genealogist specializing in Pennsylvania, state and federal land records, and methodology.

This meeting will be in person but our speaker will be on Zoom.  GiSTL Members who can not attend in person can email for Zoom link if preferred.

Our meetings are open to all who would like to join us and see if they are interested in joining our group.
